CHAPTER I
CHAPTER I
Seventeen year old Thrist Le'Grey sat slumped on the porch stairs, thinking about what had happened at meal time earlier in the lunar cycle. His mother had been talking in a hushed voice to his aunt about the war against the Bello fighters(Spawns of the Man-In-Black), “the man in black appeared in one of the shacks,” his mother had said, “our brother was one of them, one of the victims, the man didn’t destroy all of them, only four are dead, the rest are just wounded.”
Thrist’s aunt had gasped and asked if her brother was among the dead, mother had nodded her head and a tear had trickled down her cheek, falling to the floor making a hissing noise before evaporating. His mother was mad alright. He always knew that when his mother cried hot tears. There must be a ton of small burn marks around the house from her tears. He thought, our wood floors are not the best looking in town, that’s for sure!
“Thrist!” Thrist snapped his head up and looked around. Nobody was there.
“Thrist, it's Maggie!” Thrist smiled at the cheerful voice of his invisible friend. He had met her last year they had been best friends since. she had arrived on Cor 3000 frome her own planet that had already been over taken an destroyed by the man in black. Now all of her kind were dead or somewhere on different planet or continent. Only her family and her closest relatives were with her.
“Oh, hi Maggie.” He mumbled, his mind still drifting.
“What’s the matter long face, you look depressed.” Maggie sat down by Thrist, at least it sounded like she had.
“Just thinking.” Thrist smiled
“Well Thrist, I was thinking we could go on a walk today. counting to three he reopened them and held his hands out. He felt Maggie set hers on his.
“Palms up?” He asked.
“Yup, Gees Thrist, I have been waiting for you to do this since i got here!” Thrist smiled, shut his eyes, pictured Maggie in his mind and reopened his eyes. And there she was, her small form standing there on the grass, she smiled.
“Can you see me?” She asked, Thrist nodded his head.
“Remember, you can only be visible for an eighth of this lunar cycle, if we go any lon-” Maggie cut him off,
“I know, if we go any longer than that you'll faint.” she trilled in her nonchalant way.
“ I'm guessing you will want to go centaur hunting again, huh.” Thrist laughed when Maggie nodded her head.
“Yes, Thrist you know I won't give up until I meet one! My mom met one before she died...so I have to too.” Maggie made a fake sad face, making her lip tremble and her eyes droop. Thrist sighed and motioned Maggie to follow him.
Maggies eyes glittered with delight as they began to walk down the path they had followed so many times before. Maggie was convinced that there was a centaur village at the end of the path, but they had never reached it in time because of the time limit that Maggie could stay visible.
“Maggie,” Thrist began, “What if there is no more centaurs here. And are you sure your mother saw them here? What if she saw them on your home planet.” Maggie's face scrunched up in thought.
“I don't know…”
Thrift felt a twang of sadness for the small girl, she was only 14, three years younger then Thrift, he couldn’t imagine losing his mother at her age much less, any age. They continued to walk in silence. Thrists mind began to wonder. He thought about his ability, everyone on the planet cor had an ability but Thrist had never met someone with the same ability as his.
Thrists mother always told him he was special, but he always thought that was because she was his mother… but as he got older, his power grew with him. This wasn’t normal at all. What if I am special...

The two suns were low in the sky and Thrift knew it was the end of the time that Maggie could be visible.
“Maggie, I think it’s time we go back.” Thrift furrowed his brows and squinted up. “C’mon.” He turned and started jogging down the path.
“Wait! Thrift I-” Maggie wilted, crumpling to the ground.
“ Oh!” Thrift gasped and nelt beside his friends small form. He reached for her to turn her over, she had fallen with her face towards the ground, as he did this she grabbed his wrist, standing up as she did so.
“O-ouch, Maggie that hurts.” Thrist twisted his face in pain as Maggie’s grip tightened.
“So?” Maggie smirked. “Thrist, you fall for things so easily. I thought you would be tougher to fool, with all your powers I never would have fallen for a trick like this. How dumb can you be?” Maggie’s voice suddenly changed to a older voice, more cunning, More teen like, more attractive. Her eyes flashed with amusement, as if she were enjoying this.
“P-powers? I-I don’t understand...what are you doing? I thought you were, you were… Maggie. N-not whatever… this is. What’s wrong with you?” At this point Thrist was really confused. He didn’t understand what she meant by powers or for that matter what she wanted from him. Suddenly, his stomach flipped and his brain felt foggy. “Very funny Maggie. But we really do need to get moving. I’m getting light headed and you know what that means.” He added a warning tone to his voice, this act was getting annoying
“Yes I know exactly what that means. Why are you questioning me? You think this is a game? Don't you see Thrist I, I work for the man in black.” Maggie said this through clenched teeth. “Oh and by the way you feeling like you are, that’s a good sign...for me, I have been stalling, just waiting for you to get weaker, because I knew that otherwise you would be to strong for me to fight, if it came fo that, but now I have the complete advantage. Now stop fighting the urge to pass out and give in to it. Or will I have to make you do it.” Her eyes looked to be on fire. Thrist stared into those fiery eyes and thought of how they used to be calm and curious. Maggie has played a very good part.
“You can’t make me do this Maggie, I don’t know what your talking about and I don’t want to. Let me go and I will forget about all of this. Ple-” Thrist let out a cry of pain as Maggie’s grip on his wrist tightened further, he reeled back the pain to much for him to handle. There was a crunch as Maggie twisted his wrist.
“I’m sorry Thrist, I liked you… I really did, but what has to be done has to be done. I hope that whatever happens to you isn’t too painful.” Finally it was to much for Thrist to take and he collapsed, too weak to stand. Maggie caught him and lowered him to the ground. The soft grass cradling him, he finally let the darkness overcome him.
